With his 2012 book, Cycle Space, Steven identified the historical significance to architecture and urban planning of the ascension of cycling for transport. The book’s reception thrust him onto the international “Liveable Cities” lecture circuit with high level consultancies, government partnerships and a follow-up book in 2017.

Giving due regard to “the steel horse” can provide strategies for preserving streetscapes and buildings predating the car. There are industrial heritage implications as well, for example when port or rail buildings are repurposed, or rail routes become trails.

Governments, public bodies and corporations have engaged him for bicycle-oriented building design, bike share plans, ride-to-work strategies, end-of-trip facilities, bicycle friendly streets, and in one case, the design of a complete bicycle network for a city in China. As a member of the City of Newcastle’s Liveable Cities Advisory Committee, he played an important role in shaping that city’s strategic plans.

Mapping techniques he devised as an academic (see below), provide a powerful overview for walkability (and bikeability) planning.

His vast experience makes him well practiced in mediating wide-ranging perspectives and unlocking hidden potential in projects with active transportation components.
