Steven’s career dates to the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake, documenting repairs to turn-of-the-century and inter-war buildings, followed by fieldwork to assess heritage items for local governments throughout the Hunter and New England Regions.

After practicing architecture in Singapore and Australia, he undertook a PhD in architectural history and commenced a fifteen-year academic career, publishing, leading study tours and teaching about the meaning of styles from antiquity to the present, with a particular focus on Twentieth-Century movements.

During this period, he designed and owner-built extensions to his own (initially crumbling) 1911 terrace in a heritage district, adding hands-on experience in conservation and restoration to his professional skills.

Next, the success of two books led to keynoting and consulting to governments all over the world, on the repurposing of industrial heritage sites with an eye to bicycle transport. International recognition for his thought leadership, in turn led to demand for his services in Australia, with government bodies and the property sector.

The experience made him a widely read author and regular keynote, with a passion for clear communication. He takes pride in reports that want to be read, for their primary research, synthesis of ideas and accessibility to marginalised groups.

He fell in love with the Northern Rivers region during Covid, when he began escaping there for the nature. When he discovered the region’s architectural highlights were in the process of being connected by a remarkable rail trail, he made the decision to move.

His goal is to help maximise the lift the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will bring to the architecturally rich settlements lining its way.
